Volunteering is a unique opportunity to meet others in the community who share your interest in local history and preservation. Opportunities are open to anyone with the time and interest. No prior experience is necessary

Volunteer & Docent Opportunities

Docent: Annenberg Community Beach House – Lead tours of the 1920s Marion Davies Guest House and Beach House grounds as visitors explore the legacy of media mogul William Randolph Hearst, actress Marion Davies and trailblazing architect Julia Morgan. Tours are offered Friday - Monday from 12-2 p.m. Docents are asked to work twice a month. For more information or questions, contact Ruthann Lehrer at ruthannpreserves@yahoo.com.

Docent: Downtown Walking Tour – Lead tours of historic downtown Santa Monica in a two-hour walk, using architecture to tell the city’s history from its frontier beginnings in the late 1800s to today’s sophisticated metropolis. Tours are offered twice a month on Saturdays at 10 a.m. Docents are asked to volunteer once every other month. For more information or questions, contact Ruthann Lehrer at ruthannpreserves@yahoo.com

Docent: Preservation Resource Center – Lead tours through the last intact surviving Shotgun House in Santa Monica, which was built in 1897. Saved by the community and restored by the Conservancy, the little house serves as a model of adaptive reuse. Today, it is the Conservancy’s headquarters and offers free resources to our community. Tours are offered one weekend a month and will be gradually expanded to include walks in the Ocean Park neighborhood. Docents are asked to work once a month. Volunteer: Program Committee – The Conservancy’s educational mission is implemented through architectural tours, visits to historic landmarks, explorations of our cultural heritage, lectures, and parties. This Committee serves as event planners and docents for our public programs, which demonstrate the benefits of historic preservation and attract new members. The Committee meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month to support our programs throughout the year.
